At 12pm the SES came to our door and said we had to be evacuated as well as them to a higher ground. We went to the meeting and decided we would be fine to stay. We packed just in case things changed, on the internet it suggested what to take I added one extra plastic box of sewing. At 2 am I heard a lot of cars out the front and went to see if the registration lady needed help with the 70 people who had just come from Boyne Caravan Park and helped fill out registration forms for an hour. I could not sleep as I had visions of being swept out to sea.
David wrote a reflection for the Gazette -
Australia Day 2013 will be remembered for all the wrong
reasons in Boyne/Tannum as a result of the emergency evacuations due to
flooding of the
Boyne
River.
Fortunately the Tanyalla Centre’s location
provides for a safe haven in such emergencies and was able to provide emergency
accommodation for over one hundred locals as well as provide sustenance for
many more including emergency personnel from its kitchen during the crisis. The
centre was the main evacuation point for the area as well as providing a
command centre for the SES during the emergency.
Perhaps it was not the best reason for a
‘camp’ but a benefit which was gratefully received by those who required
accommodation and sustenance none the less.
I took the risk of the flood waters washing me away and went for a ride on my bike along the river bike track. I rode back and got David to come and look as well. There were red claw just beside the bike track.
David saw the photos below when he went for a walk along the beach earlier in the morning.
Rick Bischel and the Lions club moved in to do the cooking.
