Australia Day +

At 12pm the SES came to our door and said we had to be evacuated as well as them to a higher ground.  We went to the meeting and decided we would be fine to stay.  We packed just in case things changed, on the internet it suggested what to take I added one extra plastic box of sewing.  At 2 am I heard a lot of cars out the front and went to see if the registration lady needed help with the 70 people who had just come from Boyne Caravan Park and helped fill out registration forms for an hour.  I could not sleep as I had visions of being swept out to sea.

David wrote a reflection for the Gazette -

Australia Day 2013 will be remembered for all the wrong reasons in Boyne/Tannum as a result of the emergency evacuations due to flooding of the Boyne River.  Fortunately the Tanyalla Centre’s location provides for a safe haven in such emergencies and was able to provide emergency accommodation for over one hundred locals as well as provide sustenance for many more including emergency personnel from its kitchen during the crisis. The centre was the main evacuation point for the area as well as providing a command centre for the SES during the emergency.  Perhaps it was not the best reason for a ‘camp’ but a benefit which was gratefully received by those who required accommodation and sustenance none the less.

I took the risk of the flood waters washing me away and went for a ride on my bike along the river bike track.  I rode back and got David to come and look as well.  There were red claw just beside the bike track.

David saw the photos below when he went for a walk along the beach earlier in the morning.

Rick Bischel and the Lions club moved in to do the cooking.

So Much Rain

Today we started the day with a walk to the beach to find there was no beach at all.  David wanted to go for a swim but I would not let him.  I would not even walk along the no beach with him to Canoe Point as we usually do.  I said I would walk to Canoe Point along the road and on the way we saw an owl on a branch above us.  As I went to take his photo he flew off.  I did take a photo in his new location but not quite as good as the first would have been.
We had been having phone calls from SES that they were needing to evacuate people from Boyne Island and wanted to use Tanyalla.  A later phone call advised they were going to use the community centre so we went off to lunch at Sher and Tony's with Anne and Jeff.  We had a lovely time and met some of Sher's friends during the afternoon.  A phone call from SES advised they did need to use Tanyalla as emergency evacuation as Boyne Island and Bargara had been declared a state emergency, off home we went to clean up somewhat.  Rather a long night with some people needing linen and the SES needing our help at different times.

Another Rainy Day

This wind and rain are crazy here today.  I was having a lovely time with my Mug Rugs until David decided it would be good to go for a walk to the beach.  On the way back I saw this poor Kookaburra sitting in a tree and lots of branches down around the centre.  It was not pleasant to say the least walking on the beach.  A bit frightening, but also exciting to see the wild sea and the effect that it had on the beach erosion.

Mug Rug Swap

I joined another of Michele Foster's swaps.  A rainy day and a good opportunity to make a start.  David was able to be kept buisy tracing and cutting my applique shapes.

Swaps

The craft group enjoyed the Christmas pot mitt swap and I always enjoy swaps.  I  have organised a luggage tag swap for them for Jan/Feb and wrote my thoughts on swaps.

Swaps:

I think you need to go into any swap with the idea you may not get back the same as you give. For me I do swaps because I love to see other people’s interpretation on a theme. We each have different skill levels and some of us have higher standards of our own work. Sometimes I have received things that don’t meet my standard – what it has taught me is acceptance and appreciation. Someone has put their time and love into it and I need to receive it with love and appreciation without judgement. One challenge I did being mug rugs I did not receive mine at all but I had the opportunity of making the swap and then sharing that idea with others giving them a piece of fabric and a challenge to make a mug rug and the pleasure for me was seeing their creation.

Swaps give me

*a purpose

*a reason

*the chance to do something for someone else

*the chance to try something new – it maybe something you have done before that you can give a new slant to.
